MUSIC AND BEHAVIOR
MUSIC AND EMOTION
Music is often used to communicate emotion.
Sound and music definitely gives rise to emotion and we are motivated to certain degree by our emotionality.
Emotion that is not filtered by the logistical function of the intellect can put us into "motion."
MUSIC AND MARKET PSYCHOLOGY
Advertisers and market psychology use this fact to link definite emotional experiences to their products.
For example:
- Excitement and dullness
- Sociability and loneliness
- Success and failure
- Good and evil
- Security and fear
MUSIC AND INTOXICANTS
Intoxicants that dull the control of the intellect and increase rajas (excitement):
- Alcohol
- Tobacco
- Marijuana
- Cocaine
- Stimulants
- Opiates
When the control of the intellect is lessened and we mix these intoxicants with musical experiences, then the impact and influence of the emotionality of the music is definitely increased.
We observe this behavior in dancing and shamanic behavior.
MUSIC AND SOCIAL INFLUENCE
Market psychology, group leaders, politicians, and those interested in exerting "social influence", try to use sound and music to "motivate" the target group.
For example:
- The effect of music on a marching band.
- Music that heightens nationalistic pride.
