SHAME and CONSCIENCE
All aspects of the our lives can be in a healthy (balanced/natural) or unhealthy (neurotic) state.
NATURAL SHAME.
We do something wrong and our conscience (that naturally knows the difference between right and wrong) makes us feel very uncomfortable and bad about the action. This is natural shame and is very healthy and normal.
It is correct that we feel shame when we do something that is obviously wrong. Hopefully we learn how to apologize, make amends, learn the lesson, and forgive all concerned.
This is very good behavior.
A well developed conscience is something very good and we should feel very happy to have this wonderful inner guide.
NEUROTIC SHAME.
A deep shame within our system is usually the product of damaging events during childhood and adolescence, but can also occur at any stage in our life when we have been vulnerable and open with others and are ridiculed, heavily chastised, belittled, and made to feel small, stupid, and worthless.
Being shamed for being natural, open, loving, weak, or vulnerable hurts us deeply and this hurt lodges deep within our system causing depression, guilt, painful and neurotic disorders. We just don't feel good enough to be alive. We feel inadequate and sorry to be alive. A deep shaming can cause us so much pain. We become apologetic for being alive. We lack assertive skills because the bottom line of shame is that we don't feel worthy of living, our self-esteem and self-worth has been damaged.
Unhealed, neurotic (unnecessary), or conditioned shame is the other side of the coin to self respect.
By understanding, healing and working with the seven center system we can heal this damage and cultivate our healthy self-respect, self-esteem, and natural self worth.
All aspects of the human experience are represented by the seven center system.
