SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS

I AM RIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG.

Sometimes, especially if we feel inferior or insecure or we are unhappy, then we might seek a situation in which to prove to ourselves and others that we are right.

This behaviour is called "self-righteouness" and we use is to make ourselves feel better at the expense (the proving wrong) of others. It's a way of inflating our deflated self image. It is the disease of egoism in action.

Self-righteousness is a very immature and socially dangerous behavior. It often becomes mercenary and barbaric as those involved will keep "making others wrong" until they feel that they themselves "are right." This may lead to mental, emotional, and physical abuse and violence.

TYRANNY.

Tyrants and petty egotists actually need a daily (or constant) sense of self-righteousness to support their central sense of identity (who they think themselves to be). They are psychologically addicted to this self-righteous feeling - it makes them feel irrationally important (egoism), it gives them a sense of importance and "rightness" that is not actually related to their daily behavior, life roles, achievements, and activities.

Self-righteous people actually feel deeply threatened if this supply of self-righteousness is reduced or removed, therefore they must uphold, support, and increase their levels of self-righteousness by whatever means.

This often leads to "cult thinking and behavior" - the need to surround themselves by unchallenged agreement free from criticism and dissent.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS.

The self-righteous tyrant suffers from a deep inferiority complex that is usually the product of childhood and adolescent problems.

Instead of addressing the real issues, the self-righteous tyrant uses their self-righteousness to give them an irrational, over inflated sense of superiority.

To maintain this irrational and unrealistic sense of superiority, the self-righteous tyrant must uphold their beliefs, opinions, and views as "the unchallengeable truth" and they must prove that this is so at all times - they must constantly prove they are "right" otherwise their whole superiority complex will be threatened.

Thus, self-righteous people often display:

  1. A narrow or closed mind.

  2. Attention seeking behavior.

  3. Extreme belief and behavior.

  4. The constant need to prove that they are right.

  5. Immaturity.

  6. Vicious behavior.

  7. Highly competitive and mercenary behavior.

  8. Rigid and inflexible holistic repertoire.

  9. Deep inferiority complex masked by an over-inflated and tyrannical superiority complex.

  10. Disturbed and irrational behavior.

  11. A lack of self-examination or self-criticism.

  12. A lack of sense of humour or ability to laugh at themselves.

  13. A demand that you take them very seriously all the time.

  14. Inability to listen to criticism or differing views.

  15. A belief that their opinion and view of life is "the truth."

  16. Threatening, violent, and barbaric behavior if you question their paradigm (view of life).

  17. An inability to be thoughtful or considerate.

  18. Inability to consider others.

  19. Denial, Projection, Transference, Blaming, and Resenting Others.

  20. Social barbarianism and delinquency.

  21. Social tyranny.

  22. Egoism.

  23. Lack of social and life management skills.
